Contemporary Art, Culture, and Language in France (July 29 - August 15, 2015) is a unique opportunity for students to earn university credit while exploring the cities of Paris, Nice, and Arles. Course work, lectures, and discussions will be held both in the context of the classroom and on location in a variety of dynamic art museums, galleries, and institutes.
  • Art and culture lecture classes in Paris, Nice, and Arles
  • Discussion and exploration of art work and architecture at the following museums in Paris: the Louvre, Centre Georges Pompidou, European House of Photography, the National Museum of Modern Art, the Marmottan Museum, the Picasso Museum, the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art, Jeu de Pomme Gallery, Musee de l’Orangerie, Gustave Moreau Museum, the Petite Palais, the Grand Palais, the Museum of Decorative Arts, the Museum of Natural History, and the Museum of Hunting and Nature.
  • Film viewing at the Cinémathèque Francaise by architect Frank Gehry in Paris.
  • Discussion and exploration of art work and architecture at the following museums in Nice: the Matisse Museum, the Chagell Museum, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Theatre of Photography, the Fine Art Museum, and Massena Museum.  
  • Exploration at the International Photography and Film Festival in Arles, as well as the Reattu Museum.  
  • Visit the Camargue in the South of France - a natural area situated between the arms of the Rhone River Delta and the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Daily free time to further explore cafes, restaurants, museums, monuments, boutiques, flea markets, parks, and architectural structures in Paris, Nice, and Arles, in addition to the beautiful beaches on the French Riviera!!



All students and majors are welcome to participate in Study Away France.  French language skills are not required.  All courses are taught in English.

Courses Offered:

IDS 297 International Culture and Study Abroad - Andrea Land and Sarah-Marie Land
This course will situate modern and contemporary visual art and practice in France and develop an awareness, understanding and appreciation of French art, design, culture, and history.
3 credit hours

IDS 297 counts towards general education requirements for all MSU students.

FRN 297 - Special Topics in French Culture and Identity - Sarah-Marie Land
This course will investigate historical, contemporary, and social forces that have shaped and continue to shape French culture and identity. Students will develop an awareness of intercultural communication of the French culture: stereotypes and identity; inequality and difference; the home environment and childhood; and, norms and customs. 3 credit hours

ART 200 - Art in Context - Andrea Land
Art in Context, an art appreciation course, will look critically at objects of art - developing an appreciation and awareness of the objects' value within the context of society - in particular, French society. We will investigate techniques and processes of creating art and address questions, such as why do we make art?  How do we interact with art?  We'll investigate:  the paintings in the Lascaux Cave; the Water Lily series by Claude Monet; paintings by Vincent van Gogh; photographs by artists Bernard Faucon, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sarah Moon, and Sophie Calle; and, two-dimensional and three-dimensional works by artists Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso.  3 credit hours

ART 200 counts towards general education requirements.

ART 497 - Special Topics in Contemporary Art in France - Andrea Land
Individuals will work with the professor one-on-one to develop individual studio and/or research writing assignments.  Studio art students will have the opportunity to have a solo or 2-person exhibition as part of the course program.

Special Topics in Contemporary Art in France is an interdisciplinary studio art course in which individuals will examine, create, and discuss artwork in order to expand cultural understanding of critical perception and societal effects.  Explored French artists will include Sophie Calle, Yves Klein, Louise Bourgeois, Bernard Faucon, and Niki de Saint Phalle.  ART 497 will also include the analysis of various exhibition sites and spaces - museum studies, in addition to an examination of chromophilia - the study of color - in artwork. Onsite discussions and reflection at the International Photography and Film Festival in Arles, France.  3 credit hours


Discussions and lectures will be held onsite at local universities, as well as various art museums, galleries, gardens, and architectural monuments throughout Paris and Nice.  Study Away France will also include exploration and reflection at the International Photography and Film Festival in Arles.




Costs:

Program Fee: $4,725.00

Early/priority enrollment date of December 15, 2014 for $100 less on the program fee ($4,625).

Program Fee Includes: The program fee includes round-trip airfare, airport transportation in Paris, lodging/hotels, classroom facilities, all in-country transportation, group excursions and entrance fees per itinerary (all monument, museum and gallery tickets, and international photography and film festival tickets), daily breakfast, welcome and farewell dinners, Study Away student fee, basic medical insurance, and some art supplies; separated costs not available.

Program Fee Excludes: Passport, ground transportation to and from St. Louis, some meals, incidentals/misc personal expenses, and souvenirs. $612/$1,224 MSU tuition for 3/6 hours of undergraduate credit. Both Missouri residents and non-residents pay the Mo. resident per-credit-hour tuition rate, per University policy.

Applications due April 24, 2015 - A nonrefundable deposit of $700 will be billed to your student account on this date. 

Scholarship Eligibility & Financial Aid: Students may apply for the College of Arts & Letters Study Away scholarship. Applications are due to the Study Away office by July 10, 2015. Please see the scholarship page on the Study Away website. Additionally, students who receive financial aid may apply aid to this program. Contact the Office of Financial Aid at 836-5262 for more information.

Application & Payment Procedures:  Missouri State University students and others who are approved by a Program Director may apply.

MSU Students: A non-refundable deposit of $700 will be billed to your University account upon application (deadline May 12, 2014). You will also receive a second billing in May and a final billing on June 13, 2014, for the balance of the program fee ($4,025). MSU course tuition will be billed to your University account and is due according to the university payment plan.

Visiting Students: A non-refundable deposit of $700 (check or money order) must accompany your application (deadline April 24, 2015). A check or money order for the balance of the program fee ($4025) will be due by July 10, 2015. MSU course tuition will be billed to your University account and is due according to the university payment plan.


IN ORDER TO ENSURE PARTICIPATION IN THIS STUDY AWAY PROGRAM, THE ENTIRE
AMOUNT OF THE PROGRAM FEE MUST BE RECEIVED BY JULY 10, 2015. PAYMENT CAN BE MADE ONLINE OR AT THE BURSAR’S OFFICE.


Cancellation & Refund Policies:

• Students who withdraw prior to June 19, 2015 will receive a refund of fees paid, less the $700 deposit and any non-refundable purchases made on his/her behalf.

• If a student is forced to withdraw after June 19, 2015 for a bona fide medical reason, s/he will receive a refund of fees paid, less the $700 deposit and expenses. A certificate of incapacitating illness or injury from a licensed physician is required.

• Students withdrawing voluntarily after June 19, 2015, or withdrawing due to medical reasons not protected under the fees refund policy, receive no refund.

• Once the program has started, no refunds will be issued under any circumstances.

• All notifications of withdrawal must be made in writing and sent to the Program Director and Director of Study Away Programs at the Study Away Office, Jim D. Morris Center, Suite 403. Non-payment of fees does not guarantee automatic withdrawal.
